Wonders Academy

Wonders Academy is coming soon to Warsaw, Indiana.

Acton Academy is our parent school. Based in Austin, Texas, Acton Academy is recognized for revolutionary learning design. Acton Academy and its affiliate schools often make the news and receive regular national recognition. The founders of Acton Academy, Laura and Jeff Sandefer, also founded run a highly competitive business college, Acton School of Business, which rivals Harvard in its rigor and education quality. We have over 300 sister sites around the world!

Our program focuses on Socratic discussions and group projects. Montessori methods are used in our learner-driven studio.  The classroom will be overseen by a guide and the guide's role is to ask questions and to encourage students to think and seek their own answers. Students will practice discussing and debating past and current events. Students will work on real-world group projects and have time to investigate their own interests. The students will be awarded badges as opposed to grades and must achieve certain benchmarks before moving on to middle school and high school. Our students will also set and monitor their own learning goals. Our academy will run on an 11-month school-year and attendance is 5 days a week. All grade levels will exhibit their work to the public at the end of each 6-week session. The skills and experiences gained from a discussion-based, learner-driven, classical education are the pillars for producing creative thinkers who are confident leaders. Our students are free to progress at their own pace in math and language arts.

The elementary will serve students age 7 through 11, in grades 1st through 5th. The different ages will work together as one class. We will cover core subjects (math, reading, and writing) as well as history as a group or independently. Other subjects (science, applied math, arts) will be incorporated into the projects, called quests.

Our future middle school (grades 6th through 8th) will offer challenging reading, writing, and group quests.  A critical part of this learning phase is reading quality, time-tested books. Another key component is that the students are tasked with analyzing the past and present from someone else's shoes. During this time the students are encouraged to begin researching their ideal careers and they may enter into internships.

The high school (9th through 12th) level learners will be tasked with many quests. They will read lots of deep books and they will participate in and lead Socratic discussions about past and present events. High School students will have the option to take local college classes for dual credit-should they want to go the college route. They will also work at internships so that they can find their calling and change the world.

Hero's Journey

The core promise is that each student will “Begin a Hero’s Journey.”  Through real-life challenges in the one room schoolhouse, “Our young  people at Acton are learning that courage, grit, and perseverance matter far more than regurgitating facts,” said Laura’s husband and Acton co-founder Jeff Sandefer.
